Triumph over Xiaomi: Huawei Mate 50 Pro has the best cell phone camera – even without a Leica

• The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the new leader in the DxOMark mobile phone camera test.
• It is the first mobile phone whose camera was not created in cooperation with Leica.
• Leica’s new cooperation partner Xiaomi only ranks 11th with its top model.

The experts from the website DxOMark have extensively tested the camera of the Mate 50 Pro from Huawei and have chosen the cell phone as the new leader in their photo cell phone charts. With 149 points, it beats the Google Pixel 7 and the Honor Magic4 Ultimate (147 points each) as well as the iPhone 14 Pro Max (146 points).

The good picture quality in every situation was praised in the test, whereby the cell phone, like its predecessors, delivers above-average pictures, especially in the dark and at dusk. The testers also liked the new variable aperture system, it was innovative and enabled good group shots and night shots.

In recent years, Huawei has always taken the top position in the DxOMark with its top smartphones from the P and Mate series. Nevertheless, the success of 2022 is special, because in May 2022 it was announced that the long-standing cooperation with the German camera manufacturer Leica was ending. The Mate 50 Pro is the manufacturer’s first top smartphone since 2016 without a Leica camera.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra far behind

Instead, Leica is now working with competitor Xiaomi, among others. So far, however, little success. The only Xiaomi cell phone with a Leica camera so far is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which is only available in China. In the DxOMark it is currently lagging behind with 136 points in 11th place, still behind its own predecessor Mi 11 Ultra.

It remains to be seen whether the upcoming Xiaomi 13 with a Leica camera can challenge the Mate 50 Pro for the top position.
