Tropical cyclone Freddy passed north of the islands of Mauritius and Reunion Island on Monday. The strong wind has already caused damage, although the extent remains to be seen.

Effects of “Freddy” on Mauritius

On Tuesday afternoon, “Freddy” will hit the east coast of Madagascar. With expected wind speeds of almost 200 km/h, this is a category 3 tropical cyclone. Flooding and landslides are to be expected. In January, the weaker storm “Cheneso” in Madagascar claimed 22 lives.

Very durable and intense storm

“Freddy” has been sailing the Indian Ocean for two weeks (see video at the beginning of the article). This is an exceptionally long lifespan for such a storm, also known as a “cyclone” on the Indian Ocean. “Freddy” has already set a record: never since records began has a cyclone in the southern hemisphere absorbed so much energy (accumulated cyclone energy). In addition, the storm partially reached the strongest level 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
