BEIJING (Reuters) – Several cities in southern China raised their cyclone warning levels on Wednesday amid the threat of Tropical Storm Ma-on, which is expected to make landfall in Guangdong province on Thursday.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a strong wind advisory midday (0440 GMT) with speeds of up to 62 km/h. The storm, which is about 440 km southeast of Hong Kong, is expected to bring heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Maritime Bureau has banned navigation under the structure.

Ma-on is the ninth cyclone of the season and is expected to generate waves of five to eight meters in the northern part of the South China Sea, according to local media.

The storm is expected to affect several cities in Guangdong province, including Shenzhen, Chaozhou, Huizhou and Yangjiang.

Shenzhen Airport announced on Weibo messenger the suspension of flights between 3 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday and the city’s train services halted some routes between Wednesday and Friday, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper.
