Nearly 8,000 members of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity union, or about a third of its members, stopped work on Friday. South Korean truck drivers, most of whom are self-employed, are calling on the new government to maintain current rules that guarantee them a minimum wage. They are also asking for an extension of the system of “safe rates”, a mechanism introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to guarantee minimum freight rates, which is due to expire in December.
