Face of the RT France channel for five years, journalist Stéphanie de Muru announced Monday, in an interview given to LCI, her decision to leave the Russian media. In question, the war launched by Russia in Ukraine. Russian media are currently under threat of suspension in the European Union.

She had been one of the emblematic faces of RT France since 2017. Stéphanie de Muru hosts a daily program at 8 p.m. on the Russian media. But, in an interview with LCI on Monday, the journalist announced her decision to exercise her conscience clause to leave RT France, in the context of the war in Ukraine. She explained the reasons for her choice at the microphone of Damien Givelet. “The Russian military intervention was for me the red line,” she recalls. “I always said that if one day something bothered me I would draw the consequences. I draw the consequences today.”

“A war is not trivial,” continues the journalist on LCI. “The voice of Russia has unfortunately become inaudible. Trust has been broken. In this context, it is extremely complicated to exercise your profession as a journalist when you work in a channel affiliated with Russia.”

A rapid suspension of Russian media

On Sunday, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed her desire to ban the RT channel from all countries of the European Union. A decision that Stéphanie de Muru regrets. “Ursula von der Leyen confuses Sputnik, RT UK and RT Germany, which is not the same thing at all. She says she wants to prevent spreading lies. On this point, I completely disagree On RT France, they are the most honest French journalists there are and who are committed to doing the job.”

Faced with this decision to ban RT in the European Union, the staff of RT France informed its teams on Sunday evening that it would use all possible legal remedies to avoid a closure. On Monday, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian promised that measures to put an end to disinformation disseminated in Europe by Russian propaganda organs would be effective by Tuesday or Wednesday.
