Turbulent cup thriller in Essen
Only the fourth lead is enough for HSV

Hamburger SV is in the second round of the DFB Cup. Third division team Rot-Weiss Essen can counter a deficit three times, but shortly before the end of extra time the second division team then strikes again. 1. FC Heidenheim clearly wins its first cup game as a Bundesliga club.
Rot-Weiss Essen – Hamburger SV 3: 4 (3: 3, 1: 2)
Despite three playful tours, Hamburger SV has made it into the second round of the DFB Cup. The second division team and three-time cup winner won the turbulent and fast-paced traditional duel against the former cup winner Rot-Weiss Essen, who played a class lower, 4:3 (3:3, 1:1).
With 19 goals, the three HSV competitive games this season were all real spectacles. Essen, who were a worthy part of this spectacle on Sunday, were eliminated in the first round for the sixth time in the last seven participations. In 2021 they had reached the quarterfinals as a fourth division team. Bakery Jatta used two gifts from Essen to take the lead twice (37th/54th minute), Robert Glatzel scored the third (66th). But Essen kept coming back through Torben Müsel (42′), Moussa Doumbouya (56′) and Lucas Brumme (83′). Only the 4:3 by Laszlo Benes (117th) brought victory and saved the HSV a penalty thriller.
Jatta tipped a dirty ball off José Rios Alonso’s foot on his first goal and gave Hamburg-born Jakob Golz, son of HSV record keeper Richard Golz, who was sitting in the stands, no chance. But just five minutes later, Müsel curled a free kick from 25 meters through a gap in the HSV wall to equalize.
The second half started quickly. First Glatzel headed to the crossbar (51′), then Jatta almost got a copy of his first goal when he took the ball off Felix Bastian’s foot. But this time it only took two minutes for the underdog to hit back. Then Glatzel scored after a corner kick in the style of a top scorer, but after another crossbar header from Jatta (79th), the third division team showed great morale. But in the end, HSV celebrated.
Rostocker FC – 1. FC Heidenheim 0:8 (0:5)
1. FC Heidenheim made it through to the second round with ease. The Bundesliga promoted team clearly won in front of 3,500 spectators at Oberliga side Rostocker FC and earned 8-0 (5-0). A week before the start of the Bundesliga, Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt fielded his supposed top eleven in the first competitive game of the new season. And the big favorite set the course for victory within nine minutes in Rostock’s Ostseestadion. Adrian Beck with a volley (9th minute), Tim Kleindienst with a brace worth seeing (12th, 15th) and Lennard Maloney (18th) gave the guests a 4-0 lead.
After that, the state cup winner from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lost some respect, launched one or the other counterattack and defended himself on the defensive as much as possible. Nevertheless, FCH goalkeeper Kevin Müller didn’t even have to intervene seriously at his old place of work. On the other hand, new signing Marvin Pieringer increased the lead to 5-0 for Heidenheim by the half-time break (38′).
In the second half, the Bundesliga newcomer, who was supported by around 200 supporters, continued to press the button, but lacked the final precision in the goal. In addition, Rostock’s goalkeeper Mika Schneider saved the fifth division team from falling behind with a number of saves. Nevertheless, new signing Eren Dinkci, who shot from close range (53′), Pieringer (72’/header) and Stefan Schimmer (86′) made it 8-0 for Heidenheim.
