Turkey club fears for Ghana professional
Footballer Atsu is mistaken and still missing

The good news is apparently not: Contrary to reports to the contrary, the footballer Christian Atsu is still missing. In addition to the 31-year-old Ghanaian, the Turkish club Hatayspor is also worried about its sports director Taner Savut.

The person who was found alive under the rubble of a collapsed building on Tuesday after the earthquake disaster in the Turkish-Syrian border region is not the Ghanaian soccer professional Christian Atsu. The whereabouts of the 31-year-old is still unclear, it was a mix-up, said his adviser Nana Sechere and Club Hatayspor. “As you can imagine, this continues to be a devastating time for his family and we are doing everything we can to locate Christian,” Sechere wrote on Twitter.

It was initially reported on Tuesday that Atsu could be recovered alive, which was confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), among others. Hatayspor coach Volkan Demirel told the Spor Arena portal that not only Atsu was missing, but also sporting director Taner Savut. “The news I have is not good, he has not yet been found under the rubble,” Demirel said of Atsu in an audio message to French news agency AFP.

Atsu, a former player for Premier League clubs Chelsea FC and Newcastle United, joined Hatayspor from the Turkish Süper Lig in September. The club comes from the city of Antakya near the Turkish-Syrian border. Only on Sunday did the 60-time national player score the winning goal against Kasimpasa to make it 1-0 for his team. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 23 million people could be affected by the earthquakes. Numerous countries, including Germany, have already promised to send emergency services and provide aid.
