BARTIN, Turkey (Reuters) – The death toll from a coal mine accident in northern Turkey on Saturday rose to 40, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said, adding that search operations and rescue were continuing.

According to Suleyman Soylu, 58 of the 110 people working in this mine, located in the province of Bartin, were rescued or got out on their own after an explosion occurred 350 meters underground. A doubt remains for a minor reported missing, he added in front of the mine.

“A fire is still going on there, the miners and the (rescue) teams have made great sacrifices not to leave their brothers there,” he continued.
