ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkish businessman Muhsin Bayrak said on Wednesday that his company was preparing to submit an offer to buy English football club Chelsea, but he wanted to get the green light first. Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, owner of the sanctioned Premier League club.

In an interview with Reuters, Bayrak clarified that his company, Ab Group Holding, had been informed by the British government, which has temporarily controlled the club since Abramovich was the target of sanctions due to the invasion of Ukraine. by Russia that any offers should be submitted by the Friday deadline.

Bayrak said he expects takeover bids worth around 1 billion pounds (1.19 billion euros), more than half of the 2.2 billion pounds his company was preparing. , he says, to pay to Roman Abramovich before the latter is the target of punitive measures and announces, on March 2, the sale of his club.

This drop in value reflects the fact that the club recently lost its sponsorship deals, the Turkish businessman explained.

Roman Abramovich bought the London club in 2003 for an estimated £140million at the time.

Some Turkish media wondered if Bayrak’s company had the financial capabilities of its ambitions, suspecting the businessman of wanting to advertise himself. In his office in Istanbul, Muhsin Bayrak denied and assured that he would submit an offer by Friday.

AB Group Holding has interests in real estate, construction and cryptocurrencies.
