Turn off the heating at night to save electricity? Why this isn’t a good idea

During the cold season, the house and apartment automatically cool down overnight. In order for the rooms to warm up again during the day, you have to heat up your heaters particularly intensively in the morning in order to reach the set temperature level. This uses more energy and ultimately costs you more money.

It is better to leave the heating constant at a lower level at night. The so-called “night reduction”, usually between midnight and 6 a.m., ensures that the heating water flows through the heating surfaces at a lower temperature, while the room temperature is kept at 16-18 degrees Celsius. This means you don’t have to turn up the heating as much to get the house or apartment warm again in the morning.

You also prevent costly and harmful damage. Because cold rooms, together with the formation of condensation on windows, often lead to mold on the walls. The consumer window Hessen therefore advises to ensure a certain minimum temperature in the rooms and to air them regularly.
