After 25 years of good and loyal service, DPReview, let go by its shareholder Amazon then in a spiral of layoffs, announced at the end of March 2023 that the site was going to close. For lovers of photo equipment and tests, it had the effect of a small bomb. However, while the site was supposed to cease all activity on April 10, DPReview continued to publish articles and tests after the fateful date, as if kept on a drip, while the video team had already left the ship to join rival PetaPixel. .
A storyline with twists and turns
Then, on June 20, the Seattle-based site announced that it had found a buyer: the Gear Patrol site. Launched in 2007, this pureplayer which tests just about everything that exists, from the computer to the car via shoes, spirits or even barbecues, therefore comes to the rescue of DPReview by adding photo expertise to the bag.
The seven members of the DPReview team join the Gear Patrol squad. The editorial staff would like to point out that this takeover does not call into account the historical editorial line. If we are relieved to see DPReview kept alive, we do hope that the site will retain its DNA, which has made it one of the leaders in the photo press.
