Long-distance rail traffic benefits from the 9-euro ticket

After the low during the pandemic, long-distance rail transport is doing well again. Not least thanks to the now expired 9-euro ticket. As the Federal Statistical Office explains, there was a record turnover in June – and almost doubled compared to June 2021.
The introduction of the 9-euro ticket has obviously helped long-distance rail transport. The industry achieved record sales since 2015 in June, the month of the launch of the low-cost regional transport ticket, like this Federal Statistical Office communicated. Compared to June 2021, the income has almost doubled.
According to the information, the entire service sector has posted a solid plus so far this summer. Passenger transport in aviation achieved by far the highest increase in sales of all areas covered: Real sales almost quadrupled in June 2022 compared to the same month in the previous year. However, it did not reach the level of June 2019, i.e. before the corona pandemic.
The sales of the trade fair, exhibition and congress organizers also increased sharply and tripled in comparison to the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the pre-crisis level was even exceeded here. The situation was similar for travel agencies and tour operators.
52 million €9 tickets sold
The 9-euro ticket enabled travel on all local public transport in Germany for June, July and August for a monthly fee of 9 euros. The ticket was one of several measures taken by the federal government to relieve consumers in view of the high energy prices. The 9-euro ticket was very popular. A total of around 52 million tickets were sold; another 10 million went to people who already had a monthly pass subscription.
The traffic light coalition decided on a follow-up ticket on Sunday. The federal government therefore wants to contribute 1.5 billion euros a year to the ticket – if the federal states contribute to the financing. The nationwide ticket should then cost between 49 and 69 euros.
