GDR, autumn 1956: The high school graduates Theo (Leonard Scheicher) and Kurt (Tom Gramenz) see the "Wochenschau" pictures of the Hungarian uprising in the cinema. Kurt is touched by the young people's desperate struggle for democracy. The two learn more about the uprising on the West radio and discuss the events with their classmates. When the RIAS called for a minute's silence for the victims, they were enthusiastic about the idea of ​​setting a sign of solidarity.

Sonja Brunner (Claudia Michelsen) works as a prison officer in a prison. She has been earning money for the family for years.
