Washington, 1971. Katharine "Kay" Graham (Meryl Streep), as publisher of the traditional Washington Post, faces a challenge: she wants to make the stagnating company profitable by going public. The editorial team is led by Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), who wants to measure himself against the overpowering New York Times. When a scandal story about the true background of the Vietnam War appears there, Ben immediately puts his reporters on the unknown source in order to get to the top secret "Pentagon Papers" himself.

Prosecutor Mehringer (Herbert Knaup) has bad cards in the trial of the Ukrainian gunman Artem Lasarew (Ulrich Matthes): his most important witness is to die. To prevent a real attack, Sarah (Lisa Maria Potthoff) plays an assassin for Mehringer. The witness, allegedly the victim of her "deadly" attack, is thus safe through this spectacular fake. But the action is not without consequences.
