In the early 1980s, Romy Schneider initiated the film adaptation of Joseph Kessel’s novel, “La Passante du Sans-Souci”, published in 1936. This project enabled her to exorcise her shame and guilt with regard to friendship that his mother Magda maintained with Hitler, notably thanks to the addition of a contemporary part which underlines the resonances of Nazi ideology almost 50 years later.

To carry out this project which is so close to her heart, Romy Schneider has shown immense courage. Indeed, the filming of the film was postponed due to his health problems (foot injury, removal of a kidney), then the accidental death of his son David.

When it was released in April 1982, The Passage of the Sans-Souci is a triumph. But barely a month later, Romy Schneider was found dead at her home, having succumbed to a heart attack, the causes of which remain unknown. Her final performance on the screen will be honored, posthumously, with a nomination for the César for Best Actress.

La Passante du Sans-Souci by Jacques Rouffio with Michel Piccoli, Romy Schneider, Helmut Griem…
