Twelve idyllic addresses with a view of Mexico

Mountains, jungles, beaches, pampas bathed in sunshine: in addition to its bewitching nature, if Mexico, as large as three and a half times the size of France, makes travelers from all over the world dream, “It’s also because its capital, Mexico, has been transformedexplains Stéphanie Chayet in the report she signs in the supplement The Taste of M, released March 25. The city “which was said to be too chaotic, too dangerous, too polluted was described as the new Berlin by the German magazine Der Spiegel », further clarifies the journalist. More generally, and beyond the gentrification of Mexico City, Mexico is this “solar destination, distant but accessible, with two very different coasts and nuggets also in the countryside”, decipher Evane Haziza-Bonnamour and Fabien Guyon, the magazine’s editors Travel Travel, consulted by Stéphanie Chayet. From the center of Mexico City to Baja California, from the island of Holbox in the Gulf of Mexico to Puerto Escondido in the State of Oaxaca, these twelve addresses, from the charming guest house to the authentic hideout lost in the pampa, are so many stops to criss-cross the country from North to South.

A stopover registered with Unesco

Bedroom of the Meson Hidalgo, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

A 3-hour drive north of Mexico City, the elegant San Miguel de Allende, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be explored on foot through its colorful houses, often bright yellow or bright red. Built three hundred years ago, the Mesón Hidalgo is one of them. Behind its facade topped with a row of vertical cacti hide three bedrooms. They are the work of American designer Laura Kirar, who collaborated with a goldsmith, a draper and a perfumer. Every detail counts. The Chana room is the largest. It is decorated with portraits of women, a large silver-framed mirror, an old chest and fine Mexican handicrafts. Smaller, Juana is in shades of red, while Su Hermana, under the roof, has its own terrace. The Allende garden and the Saint-Michel-Archange pink stone church are just a stone’s throw away.

A suite perched in the mountains

Swimming pool at the Casa Fernanda boutique hotel, in Tepoztlán, Mexico.

In the mountains, the pretty village of Tepoztlán has long attracted artists and intellectuals, especially since it can be reached in an hour by bus or taxi from Mexico City. Casa Fernanda is a 14 bedroom house with an unsuspected large garden behind its walls. Each suite (junior, standard or master) is nicely furnished, with red tiling reminiscent of terracotta tiles. Outside, within the grounds of the property, you can lie down by the pool and admire the Tepozteco, an archaeological site perched at an altitude of 2,000 meters where an Aztec pyramid stands. Local chef Iván Quiroz Lara, at the helm of La Veladora restaurant, fuses the flavors of Baja California with those of his native region, the state of Morelos, where Tepoztlán is located. For complete relaxation one hour from the capital, Casa Fernanda has a spa with sauna, hammam, massages and relaxing treatments.
