Twitter: After banning telecommuting, Musk attacks free lunches

After working remotely, Twitter boss Elon Musk plans to scrap free lunches for company staff.

According to New York Timesthe new CEO of Twitter and founder of Tesla and Space X has decided that Twitter will no longer offer free meals to its staff, in order to save $13 million a year.

On Twitter, Musk then affirmed that there were “more people making breakfast than eating it” in an exchange with a former Twitter executive, after he previously suggested the company was spending $400 per lunch.

Controversy over the cost of lunches

However, Tracey Hawkins, who was vice president of Twitter’s real estate business until recently, said Musk’s claims were “a lie” and that the per-employee spend on breakfast and lunch was $20-25 per day.

She also dismissed claims by Elon Musk that ‘hardly any employees’ have come to work in Twitter’s offices in the past 12 months, suggesting that ‘attendance was between 20 and 50% in offices. and that offering food to staff “allowed employees to work until lunchtime and until meeting time.”

Musk countered that Tracey Hawkins’ claims were “false” and that employee badge access data at Twitter headquarters in San Francisco showed “peak occupancy was 25%, average occupancy lower at 10%”.

End of teleworking and mass layoffs

It was only last week that Elon Musk sent his first-ever email to Twitter staff, in which he announced an immediate ban on working from home in all cases except those signed by him personally.

Elon Musk has also cut thousands of jobs at the social media company: After laying off around 50% of Twitter staff last week, the CEO said he laid off 4,400 more contract workers over the weekend .
