Twitter asks laid-off employees… to come back!

This is called going a little fast. Friday, November 4, a week after its takeover by Elon Musk, Twitter separated by email from nearly half of its workforce, or 3,750 employees out of 7,500. But obviously, the American multi-billionaire has put the cart before the horse, since some employees who were rudely dismissed were surprised to be contacted the next day by Twitter, which asked them to return.

According to Bloomberg and Business Insiderciting sources familiar with the matter, most of these employees were mistakenly laid off, while others were sacked before the new management realized that their work and experience could be useful in order to create the new functionalities wanted by Elon Musk, in particular within the framework of the creation of a paid version of Twitter. “These individuals are essential to the functioning of the Twitter ecosystem”thus recognized a source internal to the company to Business Insider.

84 hour work week

These details make a dismissal process already criticized for its brutal and chaotic nature a little more lunar. Shocked by the methods of Elon Musk, some employees that Twitter seeks to recover do not intend to return to the company. One of the sources of Business Insider also indicated that an employee had rejected the offer, because he felt “used and thought he would be fired soon”. In addition, the new work climate does not really make you want to stay. Twitter managers have asked employees to work 12 hours a day, Monday to Sunday, an 84-hour work week, reports CNBC.

While Tesla engineers are now on the job of evaluating the work done by the Twitter teams and defining areas for improvement, the employees who survived the purge are under great pressure. Elon Musk notably ordered to find solutions to save money, demanding among other things a reduction of one billion dollars in infrastructure costs. Dubbed the “Deep Cuts Plan,” the project aims to save between $1.5 million and $3 million a day, including on server and cloud services expenses. The Twitter teams in charge of this mission must present a plan before November 7. Under penalty of being fired in turn?
