(Reuters) – Twitter users will now have to pay eight dollars a month to access the features of Twitter Blue, a subscription allowing in particular to have their account certified, announced on Tuesday the social network’s new chief executive, Elon Musk.
“The system, currently in effect on Twitter, of lords and peasants determining who has, or does not have, certification is bullshit. Power to the people! Certification for eight dollars a month,” the billionaire wrote in a post. tweet, specifying that the price of the subscription would be adjusted “by country, in proportion to purchasing power parity”.
Having a verified account means that Twitter has confirmed that the account does indeed belong to the person or business claiming it.
The social network has until now granted certifications to profiles that it deemed worthy of interest according to its own criteria.
More than 80% of Twitter users who took part in a recent survey indicated that they would refuse to pay for certification of their account, 10% said they were willing to pay five dollars a month.
