VALLETTA (Reuters) – Two brothers have been sentenced to 40 years in prison each after admitting to the murder of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia by setting up her car on Friday on the first day of their trial.

Alfred and George Degiorgio initially pleaded not guilty at the opening of the proceedings, nearly five years after the journalist’s murder on October 16, 2017, before agreeing to plead guilty in exchange for a lesser sentence. than the life imprisonment that awaited them if they were found guilty.

Four people have now, to date, admitted to having participated in the assassination. A fifth individual, Yorgen Fenech, one of Malta’s wealthiest businessmen, is in custody awaiting trial. Prosecutors accuse him of ordering the crime. He denies all the charges against him.
