Schalke destroyed Dortmund’s winning streak with mentality

Schalke 04 don’t want to be relegated, BVB dreams of the championship. The favorite role is clearly assigned, but that doesn’t interest the royal blues. They fight back with passion, keep coming back and ending Dortmund’s most pressing dreams of becoming a champion.
Nico Schlotterbeck fell on the lawn, while Schalke coach Thomas Reis celebrated the 2-2 (0-1) win over arch-rival Borussia Dortmund like a win – and the royal blue fans happily celebrated the draw of the penultimate table in the 100th Bundesliga district derby : “We are number one in the pot”.
Even if Schalke’s mini-series broke from the last two wins, the draw only hurt Dortmund, who gave up a two-time lead and lost two points to champions Bayern Munich in the championship race. “You have to accept that now,” Schlotterbeck said on Sky: “If we make it 3-1, it’s over. Despite everything, we can’t concede two goals.” The bottom line is that the draw is “not enough,” added the national defender.
Schlotterbeck himself (38th) and Raphael Guerreiro (60th) finally gave Dortmund the lead twice. However, Marius Bülter (50th) and substitute Kenan Karaman (79th) equalized for the Gelsenkirchen team, which prevented a BVB club record: With the ninth Bundesliga three in a row, Dortmund would have set a record.
Terzić has to change too much
A week after the 2-0 win in the small district derby at VfL Bochum, the Royal Blues continued their winning streak in the second half of the season: the penultimate team has been unbeaten for seven games. “If you’re behind twice and come back like that, it feels good,” said Bülter: “The spectators pushed us incredibly. But after the last few weeks we also have the self-confidence that we can always come back.”
BVB coach Edin Terzić switched to four positions compared to the Champions League loss at Chelsea (0: 2) – twice of necessity: Julian Brandt (torn thigh muscle) was injured, captain Marco Reus fell ill. Among others, Derby veteran Mats Hummels, who played his 22nd Ruhrpott classic, returned to the starting XI.
After pyro fireworks in both fan curves, BVB tried to find their way in the fog and control the game in front of 61,571 spectators against hosts who attacked early. The Schalke supporters celebrated every slide like a goal. Dortmund gave a first warning shot through Julian Ryerson (5th), Guerreiro tested goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann (19th), the only one in the S04 team who had ever won a derby.
Bülter eats Dortmund dreams
BVB extended their ball possession phases, Schalke resorted to more and more fouls. The outsider initially had the greatest chance: After Hummels lost the ball, Rodrigo Zalazar made his way to the Dortmund goal on his own, but hastily shot over it (25′). On the other side, Moritz Jenz almost scored an own goal (27′).
When BVB combined quickly, the Royal Blues had problems: This was also the case when Donyell Malen (30th) and Marius Wolf (37th) failed to ferryman. Schlotterbeck scored from long range when he wasn’t tackled. It was the logical consequence of the increasingly clear superiority of the guests.
But Schalke put away the first deficit in the second half of the season: Bülter equalized after a cross from Michael Frey. It was the winger’s third goal in the last three games. Gelsenkirchen could not be happy about the equalizer for long. Guerreiro gave the visitors the lead again with a stunning shot into the top corner.
