two Macs with bizarre names spotted via Steam

Two Macs have been spotted on Steam’s database. Their names are strange… but not completely unknown to the battalion for all that.

Every month for years, Steam has shared its traditional survey of the hardware and software used by its users. Made from data that players have agreed to share, this survey provides a fairly good overview of the most common hardware configurations for gaming on PC… and sometimes to discover, more or less by chance, machines or components n have not yet been announced.

This is the case with the November Steam survey, at least after applying the “Mac Only” filter. Among the Macs listed by Steam for this period appear the latest MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, but also two rather mysterious models, located at the bottom of the ranking. Referred to as “Mac14.6” and “Mac15.4”, these two machines are listed with 0% users, suggesting that Apple is simply testing them internally on Valve’s platform.

Could these be the new MacBook Pros?

As pointed out MacRumors, one of these two references is not entirely unknown to the battalion – and this is what makes it so interesting to find it on the Steam survey. The “Mac14.6” had indeed already been talked about a few months ago via two separate benchmarks (here and there) carried out on GeekBench 5.

We then discovered a product under the M2 Max processor, a chip expected on the new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches, initially planned for the end of 2022 but which Apple finally seems to have postponed to 2023.

As a reminder, the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 vintage 2023 should be able to count, as a choice, on Apple Silicon M2 Pro and M2 Max chips – much more muscular versions of the “classic” M2 processors, introduced for their part in June on the latest MacBooks Air and MacBook Pro 13.
