Two minutes to understand Donald Trump’s indictment in the Stormy Daniels case

Candidate of all excesses, Donald Trump is overtaken by a scandal that he had obviously tried to stifle before it exploded, when he was running for the White House in 2016: he is accused of accounting fraud after having paid, through the Trump Organization, to adult film actress Stormy Daniels the tidy sum of $130,000 not to go public with a past relationship. He pleaded not guilty to 34 counts during his court hearing on Tuesday, April 4.

The relationship dates back to 2006. Donald Trump was then already married to Melania Trump, who had just given birth to their last son, Barron Trump.

Former lawyer for Donald Trump, Michael Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to violating election laws and was sentenced to three years in prison for these acts. After a year behind bars, he was granted parole and placed under house arrest.

According to law professor James Sample, the Stormy Daniels case could “Open Pandora’s Box” of the multiple legal cases which weigh on the former president of the United States.
