two tariff measures in favor of young unemployed people

How to help households cope with inflation? The question had already been posed to insurers at the end of June by the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire. The profession was then asked to think about proposals… Three months later, an “anti-inflation pack” was finally presentTuesday, September 20, to the media, following a meeting between the two parties in Bercy.

It mainly materializes through two measures aimed at young job seekers. The insurers have, on the one hand, undertaken to grant them a reduction of 100 euros on their annual car insurance (only once). And, on the other hand, to allow them to benefit, without additional cost, from the health insurance contract of their parents, whether it is a complementary or a mutual.

The discount on car insurance must apply to young people up to 25 years old and the extension of the health contract up to 28 years old, specified in the World the professional federation France Assureurs, which believes that the “auto” measure could affect “more than 500,000 young people”. No figures for the cost of the two measures for insurers have been disclosed.

Under inflation

“Car insurance costs on average 900 to 1,000 euros per year for a young person taking out his own contract, if he is the main driver”recalls Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of the online insurance comparator Assurland.com, who nevertheless points out that “if the young person is an occasional driver, he has every interest in being declared as a secondary driver on his parents’ contract”. As for health insurance, he adds, it costs on average, “for a young person at 300 euros per year”, but the advantage of profiting free of the contract, generally corporate, of the parents is also “benefit from better coverage”.

If the insurers have collectively committed to applying at least these two measures, other individual tariff efforts must be communicated in the weeks to come. Some companies have already drawn on Tuesday, like Axa France, which notably announced the freezing, in 2023, of car and home premiums for people under 30 without claims, as well as a discount of 100 euros on contracts health of those under 25, when they renew. Macif, for its part, has frozen its student home insurance rates.

The sum of these collective and individual measures should enable individuals to “contain the average amount of premiums [tarifs] insurance below the level of inflation in 2022 and 2023”, welcomed Bruno Le Maire. But, be careful, he added, the commitment only concerns one ” mean “, policyholders may therefore, in certain cases, depending on the risks covered, suffer price increases exceeding inflation. This would reach 5.3% in 2022 and 4.2% in 2023, according to the latest predictions from Bercy.
