According to DailyMirror, the alert was given around 4:32 p.m. Ritta Saruchera, who was on the beach with her daughter and one of her friends, said: “They were coming out of the water when they saw a struggling teenager. Another was floating in the water. We went to seek help from the rescuers and informed them of what was happening.”
And to continue: “A lifeguard went to get the two struggling swimmers, but he couldn’t get them out of the water. There he saw that another person was struggling and another lifeguard came to his aid. , but there were plenty of people in danger.” In all, a dozen people were pulled out of the water. Two of them, aged 17 and 12, unfortunately could not be revived. “They evacuated the beach so the helicopters could land. And another swimmer had to be pulled to the edge. It was horrible.”
Man arrested for manslaughter
According to another witness, Paul Moyce, 61, the young swimmers were jumping into the sea from the pier when they were swept away by the current. “I think by jumping off the pier they went too far. They must have been carried away by the current. I’ve lived here for 61 years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Following the deaths of the two teenagers, aged 17 and 12, from Southampton and High Wycombe respectively, an investigation has been opened by Dorset Police. A man in his 40s, who was on a boat close to shore at the time of the tragedy, has been arrested for manslaughter. We do not know what suspicions weigh on him. “The investigations are just beginning and we ask people not to speculate on the circumstances of the accident.“, said Neil Corrigan, Deputy Chief Superintendent of Dorset Police. The identities of the two victims have not been released.
