A curse of Windows versions ending in an even number, really?
Each month, the Steam gaming platform gives us an overview of the hardware favored by its users. Graphics cards, processors, available storage space, etc. Everything goes there. The data is collected voluntarily and anonymously, which allows us to obtain statistics that developers and manufacturers are not always inclined to share. While these can tell us a lot about the market and consumer attitudes.
As always, the numbers for Windows usage are not without interest. Just over half of gamers are still using Windows 10 (57.87%), compared to just over a third for Windows 11 (36.67%). If the latter progresses slowly, its adoption takes some time. We are no longer in the days when you had to pay full price to obtain a CD of a new version of an operating system, and Windows 11 is available free of charge for owners of Windows 10. So how can this delay be explained? ?
Is it really necessary to update as soon as possible?
The need to have a PC equipped with a TPM chip is a significant obstacle, requiring a little tinkering or purchasing a more recent processor, which is not always essential. Gamers also tend to be reluctant when it comes to updating Windows. As proof, there are still a few diehards playing on Windows 7 (1.31%) and Windows 8 (0.25%). However, these should quickly become disillusioned, since Steam will soon no longer support these versions, also abandoned by Microsoft. There is also a slight increase in Linux (0.52%), which is explained in particular by the sales of the Steamdeck.
The statistics provided by the American company also reveal other interesting facts. While the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti have made a name for themselves in gamer PCs, the GTX 1650 remains the most used graphics card, and the GTX 1060 and 1050 Ti are still in the top 10. While they are all two outings… seven years ago. A hell of a career.
Finally, note the usual ultra-dominance of NVIDIA in this ranking, AMD only managing to place its first graphics card in 25ᵉ position, with the Radeon 580, released in 2017. In the end, the brand with the green logo is preferred by 75% of players, and its competitor by 16%, the rest being grabbed by Intel and its graphics chipsets (large majority).
