PS3 and PS Vita still updated? Eh yes ! Even though firmwares are released sporadically, Sony finds a way to support its old consoles a bit. Well, except this time when it’s about removing a feature for new users.
It had been almost a year since the PS3 had been updated. Without warning, firmware 4.88 was released in June 2021 to improve console stability and blu-ray support.
But when you turn your machine back on, you’ll need to install a 4.89 update that limits your account-related options. Now, creating or managing an account will be done via a PC browser and no longer from the PS3. Likewise, in order to “enhance the security of your account”Sony Interactive Entertainment is requesting a “device setup password”.
This inability to normally create a PSN account on PS3 also applies to the PS Vita and its new firmware 3.74.
It is time to move on
The removal of this functionality is part of the logic of Sony, and even of any manufacturer, to abandon their oldest products one day or another. Even if the company has not closed the PS Stores of the two consoles, it is now more complicated to obtain games on them. All good things come to an end ?
