Minister Delegate for Transport Clément Beaune indicated that the government was “very likely” to introduce technical control for two-wheelers, in accordance with the decision taken on Monday by the Council of State. This must be “the least penalizing possible” for motorcyclists, however, underlined Clément Beaune.

The government will “very probably” introduce a technical control for two-wheelers, in accordance with the decision taken Monday by the Council of State, but it must be “the least penalizing possible” for motorcyclists, indicated Tuesday the minister delegate Transport Clément Beaune. “It will most likely be necessary to set up a technical control”, admitted Clément Beaune on France 2.

“Once we have said ‘potentially a technical check’, there are terms, all of that can be discussed”, he added, announcing “a consultation from the weekend” with backpacker associations and road safety.

“A lot of leeway”

European regulations leave “significant leeway” to governments, said the minister, referring to “something that is as least penalizing as possible”. “Its modalities, its timetable, remain to be defined,” he noted. “I think we have to be reasonable and proportionate,” he insisted.

The Council of State reinstated the technical control for two-wheelers on Monday, the application of which was planned for the beginning of 2023 before its cancellation by the government, indicating however that this measure could be “staggered over time”.
