If the technical control of motorcycles has finally been canceled in France, the life of Parisian bikers will nevertheless change as of September 1, 2022. As you may know, on this date, the town hall of Paris decided to charge for parking motorized two-wheelers on the streets of the capital.

With this new provision, the municipality wants to reduce the number of motorcycles/scooters parked on sidewalks and bicycle parking lots while encouraging users to move towards less polluting solutions such as electric two-wheelers or electric bicycles. Of course, this measure will also bring other dividends to the city’s coffers. In this article, we will cover the essential points to know, like the price, the number of pitches, the timetables, the subscriptions or even the cases of free admission.

The vehicles and locations concerned

Let’s start with the affected vehicles first. These are category L1, L3 and L5 thermal motorcycles and scooters. To find out the category of your two-wheeler, simply go to your registration certificate in section J. Concerning vehicles of category L4, L6 and L7, they are subject to the rates applicable to cars and small vans.

According to the details of the town hall of Paris, the capital has a total of 42,000 parking spaces dedicated to motorized two-wheelers (which represents little compared to the 500,000 2WD in circulation). On public roads, PTW can therefore park:

  • on dedicated spaces marked Motorcycles or 2WD
  • on the paid parking strip (also used by cars)

As you can imagine, any parking on the sidewalks or in parking lots reserved exclusively for bicycles is strictly prohibitedunder penalty of fine and removal of the vehicle.

The price of parking

Once your PTW/motorcycle is parked, you will need pay the parking feeeither via nearby parking meters, or via the following dedicated mobile applications: PayByPhone, ParkNow and Flowbird. Be sure to enter the registration number of your vehicle correctly, to guarantee that the payment is taken into account during a check by the police.

Parking will be paid from Monday to Saturday in all the streets of the capital from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., excluding Sundays and public holidays, including the month of August. Note that it will be possible to pay for parking in advance. Let’s take an example: paid parking on a Sunday will actually be valid for the first paid time slot on Monday.

It should be noted that this fee can be paid from the start of parking or afterwards via what is called an FPS (Post-parking Package). Contrary to what one might think, it is not a fine but a fee for the occupation of public space. The amount of the FPS is equivalent to the price of a 6-hour visitor parking lot, i.e. €37.5 in zone 1 and €25 in zone 2.

For visitors

Here first the prices charged for visitors in PTW according to the different districts of the capital. Note that prices can be divided by 15-minute increments. You will find all the prices in the table below.
