In the Monte Rosa massif there was a drama on Saturday in which two women died of frostbite.
A group of mountaineers with the two women and a man wanted to reach the Vincent pyramid (4215 meters), which is just under a kilometer south of the Italian-Swiss border. The border between the two Italian provinces of Aosta Valley and Piedmont runs above the summit. The three climbers reached the top when a heavy snow storm broke out. They then alerted the rescue workers.
Teams from the mountain rescue service in the Aosta Valley started a search. The group could be located at an altitude of 4150 meters, but the rescue was not possible due to the poor weather conditions.
First aid in the mountain hut
The mountain rescuers only managed to reach the group around 9 p.m. The group was brought to the Mantova mountain hut (3498 m).
Paolo Camune (48), the head of operations, told Blick: “Both women’s hearts stopped beating. We spent two hours trying to revive the female climbers. We filled all available water bottles with hot water and placed them on the women’s bodies. We also wrapped them in woolen blankets. We also used a defibrillator repeatedly. Unfortunately it was all in vain. “
On Sunday at 7 a.m., the bodies were flown into the valley by helicopter.
