Tyler Rake 2 on Netflix: the enigmatic end with Idris Elba explained

Idris Elba in “Tyler Rake 2”? It was the icing on the cake. The star of “Luther” plays a very short role opposite Chris Hemsworth but which could be decisive for the sequel.

Like more than 40 million people around the world, you have watched Tyler Rake 2, carried with all his muscles by Chris Hemsworth. And although the film is relatively simple in its script – but very impressive in its direction – you wonder about this open ending. What does this mean for the future? Because there will be a sequel! This was announced with great fanfare at the Tudum event in Sao Paulo last weekend.

At the very end of the film, Idris Elba makes a second surprise appearance only to come face to face with Tyler. As during the first meeting, there is tension between the two men who do not know each other and the character played by Elba is particularly sarcastic in the face of Tyler Rake.

Very little information is revealed about this man or the identity of his employer. When Tyler Rake asks the man played by Idris Elba – who is named Alcott in the end credits – who his boss is, the latter replies: “A first class motherfucker“. Then he turns his back on her, concluding “You will love it” what seems puzzled Tyler.

To intimidate someone like Rake would require a pretty impressive name. Director Sam Hargrave drops some clues to Collider : “We know who the character wants to be“, but adds: “We do not yet know who will be the actor who will play this character“. Although no name has yet been chosen, Hargrave continues to play the card of mystery:

You just made two pretty crazy movies with Tyler Rake. What will make the sauce rise, what are the stakes? How will they rise? And when you drop a single dialogue, like ‘He’s a bad guy’, you’re like, ‘Okay, a dialogue says this is someone who might be in the same league as Tyler Rake. Now I’m intrigued.’

And so, as a character, we know who that person will have to be. Who will embody it? I think that’s the beauty of this sentence. It’s like that simple phrase could attract a whole bunch of cool, amazing actors to play this crazy character. So it’s a bit of both, but I think we wanted to keep things open, while still capturing the essence of what was needed for Tyler Rake’s next movie.“.

Why bring him back

As for how this scene plays out, Sam Hargrave explains that it was completely intentional to have Idris Elba return at the very end. Although “many things changed during the film“, he claims that with Elba in this scene, they knew it was the best way to end the film before the credits.

It was kind of like a post-credits scene from Marvel, wasn’t it? You wanted him to be there again at the end so people could start speculating and being like, ‘Oh damn, they’re going to star in a movie together after this’“. And if you were disappointed by the lack of a post-credits scene, it was an intentional decision, explains Hargrave, for the simple reason that “you’re not really going to top marvel“, but also because they wanted to allow Tyler Rake to move on to the next film”freely“.

A far-fetched theory stirs the web with this ending. Idris Elba recently reprized the role of Luther in the movie Luther: Fallen Sun and Tyler Rake 2’s ending is similar to that of Jamie Payne’s movie. Luther escapes prison, recruited by a mythical agency that does not reveal his identity. Speculation is rife and some imagine that Alcott is in fact Luther in his new mission. But we will have to wait to get to the bottom of it.
