The meal delivery platform Uber Eats has disconnected, in recent weeks, nearly 2,500 worker accounts considered to be fraudulent. On Monday, 500 African delivery men demonstrated in Paris to express their anger and dismay.
A few days ago, Uber Eats announced that it had disconnected some 2,500 delivery people, after ordering an audit from an external service provider. He investigated for weeks on the 60,000 active accounts referenced on the platform to find fraudulent profiles. As a result, there were more or less 500 of them this Monday to demonstrate in front of the French headquarters of the American company.
Uber conducted an audit to track down fraudulent accounts
During the first half of the year, Uber conducted an audit called ” meticulous » delivery accounts that use the meal delivery platform. After identifying the fraudulent profiles, the company deactivated them, but at the same time set up an appeal procedure for aggrieved delivery people.
As soon as the decision was publicly announced, the CFDT, in a press release signed with the Union-Indépendants organization, cried foul, accusing Uber Eats of throwing “ violently thousands of people in extreme precariousness “, while asking for a re-examination of the situation of undocumented workers, “ who have no choice but to work under an alias to survive “, recall the organizations.
In September 2021, the main players in meal delivery in France (Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Stuart and Frichti) had signed a specific charter with the government, in order to harmonize and check the identity of their deliverers on a weekly basis.
The call for help from African delivery men
On Monday, 500 African delivery men from the Uber Eats platform marched in Paris between Place de la République and the company’s French headquarters to shout their anger, armed with the slogans ” Uber thieves », « justice for delivery people ” Where ” angry delivery men “.
Some are Guineans, others Ivorians. Many were in any case gathered to denounce brutal disconnections, sometimes displaying a satisfaction rate of 100% or almost with the customers of the platform. ” I was logged out two weeks ago, I’ve been working through the entire lockdown, I’m asking Uber to put me in good standing so I can work freely “, told AFP Osseni Koné, a 34-year-old delivery man of Ivorian origin. Others do not understand that the firm is only reacting now, while some have adopted this operation for several years.
Uber insists on having carried out an audit in order to fight against the irregular subletting of the accounts of delivery people, some taking advantage of the situation of great precariousness of some to make easy money. And at the same time, all the deliverers questioned admitted to having used identity papers that did not belong to them. Uber Eats nevertheless reactivated nearly 4% of disconnected accounts, after an initial review.
