Has the hour of profitability come for Uber? This is what Dara Khosrowshahi, the boss of the American group, hopes after a rather encouraging last quarter of 2022. Over the last three months of the past year, the VTC platform recorded a turnover of 8.6 billion dollars, up 49%, and a net profit of 595 million dollars, however lower by 33 % to that achieved over the same period a year earlier.
If Uber received profits in the fourth quarter of 2022, this is not the case for the rest of the year. The company thus conceded a heavy net loss of 9.1 billion dollars, compared to barely 496 million in 2021. At this level, Lyft’s rival has therefore done even worse than in 2020, a particularly difficult year since the races VTC had suddenly collapsed due to the confinements imposed around the world to stem the spread of Covid-19.

Dara Khosrowshahi shows her optimism
However, as the effects of the pandemic have now faded, growth indicators are in the green. The mobility business, which includes ride-hailing, emerged from the fourth quarter of 2022 up 82% year-on-year to $4.1 billion, while the home meal delivery business, which grew by was soaring during the health crisis, recorded an increase of 21% over the period, to 2.9 billion dollars. The freight business, in which Uber has just cut its workforce, also climbed 43% over the last three months of the year, to $1.5 billion.
Reading these results, Dara Khosrowshahi is optimistic for the year 2023. “The global reach of our business and the unique advantages of our platform position us ideally to accelerate this momentum”, estimated the successor to Travis Kalanick at the head of the Californian company. Since his arrival in 2017, the former boss of Expedia has cleaned up to restore Uber’s image.

Uber offloads loss-making businesses
