French video game giant Ubisoft suffered a malicious intrusion over Christmas, with hackers nearly getting their hands on some 900 GB of data, a colossal haul.
After the hack of video game publisher Insomniac Games earlier this month, Ubisoft believed it would suffer the same fate in recent days. The French studio known for its successes Assassin’s Creed, Tom Clancy’s, Rayman, Far cry or more recently Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, managed to narrowly thwart a massive hack. On December 20, the company suffered an attack similar to that carried out against Insomniac Games. Hackers wanted to seize 900 GB of Ubisoft data
On the Ubisoft side, we can say that we had a narrow escape! The studio founded by the Guillemot brothers saw its internal services compromised by a security breach a few days ago, into which hackers were able to rush in to try to get their hands on a hell of a lot of money: 900 GB of data.
“ We are aware of an alleged data security incident, and we are currently investigating », explained the Ubisoft teams to our colleagues at BleepingComputer. Without saying more, the company continues to investigate this major incident. But then, what were the pirates eyeing, and what actually happened?
More fear than harm, even if the pirates showed they were serious
Hackers, from a currently unknown actor who has not claimed responsibility for the attack, managed to break into Ubisoft’s systems and wander around for almost 48 hours. The hacker(s) in question have made it clear that they are serious.
The latter published screenshots of their intrusion, showing having had access to the Ubisoft SharePoint server, the Confluence collaborative work software, Microsoft Teams storage but also the MongoDB Atlas cloud service. It is unclear at this point how the hackers managed to gain entry into the system initially.
What seems certain is that they were trying to obtain user data from Rainbox Six Siege, but the attempt was in vain, fortunately. Ubisoft therefore succeeded, in time, in securing its systems. A Christmas miracle?
