Ubisoft Scalar: innovative cloud technology unveiled, new license using it in development

If the cloud gaming struggling to find its followers, the use of technologies in the cloud is still an interesting source of innovation for video games. The latest to want to take advantage of it is Ubisoftwith its technology Ubisoft Scalardeveloped by Ubisoft Stockholmantenna directed by Patrick Bach since 2017 and regular collaborator of Mass Entertainment. He is assisted in this task by Ubisoft Massive, Ubisoft Redlynx, Ubisoft Bucharest and Ubisoft Kyiv.

Its purpose is not to allow stream full games like Stadia and Luna, but to use the power of the clouds on more classic products in order to overcome the technical limitations of consoles and PCs. It aims to enable the creation of “bigger, more social and richer games than anything that has ever been seen before at Ubisoft”, freeing itself from constraints in order to “create something fresh and impactful”. . The project has been in the making since opening the studio over 4 years ago and leading the team to “relearn and rethink the way games are made”.

The technology of cloud computing should serve several games Ubisoft in the long term, in particular to make the services “always available”: the Swedish studio cites as an example “very rich worlds that can grow, evolve and change as players play them”which is “still possible to update in chunks” by having “more players in a single shared world”, which “will introduce new social experiences we’ve never seen before”. scalar will exist in addition to traditional game engines, such as Anvil and Snowdropand will also allow developers to work faster, as well as to deliver updates without downloading a patch.

Ubisoft Stockholm also indicates working on a new license “which will fully exploit the possibilities of this technology”, but is not ready to share details about him. We look forward to seeing what will scalarand if it will make the video game evolve as much as the developers hope.
