Ubisoft unveils Ghostwriter, an AI that creates NPC dialogues

Artificial intelligence tools are improving over the years, now making it possible to create just about anything and everything thanks to “machine learning”. Some developers have already announced that they would use these tools to create artworks particularly preparatory, but Ubisoft goes even further.

The studio unveils this week Ghostwriteran artificial intelligence tool that is able to create lines of dialogue for video game NPCs. If you know tools like Midjourney Or ChatGPTit’s the same principle: a human writes a command and Ghostwriter unpacks lines of dialogue based on it, which can then be refined or modified. Ghostwriter therefore cannot do everything solo, a human is always necessary, but of course, it makes the screenwriters groan.

Alanah Pearce (Santa Monica Studio) thus explains that “Having to edit AI-generated scripts/dialogs seems to take a lot longer” than just writing drafts, and the budget would be more wisely spent hiring writers. Same story for Edd Coates (Radical Forge) which asserts that “this work could have created a job for a Junior”, recalling that many young screenwriters expand their CVs by writing this kind of small lines of secondary dialogues. Comments under the video Youtube ofUbisoft are all in this line, as much to say that Ghostwriter does not attract many people at the moment.

Only time will tell if Ghostwriter has one. Until then, you can find the games ofUbisoft on Gamesplanet.
