In a study, the UFC-Que Choisir alert Thursday on silicone molds whose sometimes harmful components can contaminate food during cooking. A total of 29 molds sold commercially and on the Internet were analyzed and six are not recommended by the consumer association.

A few weeks from Christmas, you may be thinking about New Year’s Eve menus, but to prepare your most beautiful dishes, be careful, do not use just any mould. The UFC-Que Choisir alert this Thursday on the presence of harmful substances in silicone cake molds.

Six Disadvised Molds

At very high temperatures during cooking, the levels of substances emitted by the molds will migrate from these silicone dishes into the food. The presence of fat in food accentuates this contamination towards your cake or pie.

A total of 29 molds sold commercially and on the Internet were tested by UFC-Que Choisir. Among them, 23 are considered “unsafe”, six are not recommended by the consumer association such as Carrefour Home, AliExpress or Tupperware molds. On the other hand, utensils from the Tefal and Ikea brands are the least dangerous to health.

Many health risks

In reality, the health risks are numerous: increased risk of cancer or even fertility problems… It is for this reason that the UFC-Que Choisir is asking to review the French regulations: no maximum rate of migration to foods for the most harmful substances is defined.

Another problem in certain European countries, the laws are even more lax and these molds manufactured in these countries are legally marketed in France. The consumer association therefore wishes that the repression of fraud be seized to strengthen controls.
