UK CMA says Veolia/Suez merger risks harming competition

PARIS (Agefi-Dow Jones)–The British competition authority, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), announced on Thursday that it had “provisionally found” that the acquisition of the utility group Suez by its rival Veolia presents risks for competition in the United Kingdom.

The transaction “would result in a loss of competition in the provision of several waste and water management services in the UK”, the CMA said in a statement.

“The CMA invites interested parties to respond to its interim findings by June 9, 2022 and to its Notice of Possible Remedies, which outlines possible options to address its interim concerns, by June 2, 2022,” said CMA. added the competition authority.

“These responses will be reviewed before the CMA releases its final report, due July 17, 2022,” the authority added.
