LONDON (Reuters) – Britain said on Friday it would send experts to help Ukraine gather evidence and prosecute Russia for war crimes.

The team of experts will help the Ukrainian government to gather evidence and bring legal proceedings against Russia for war crimes. It will also be made up of experts in wartime sexual violence and will arrive in Poland in early May, Foreign Minister Liz Truss announced.

“Russia brought barbarism to Ukraine and committed despicable atrocities, including against women. British expertise will help uncover the truth and hold (Vladimir) Putin’s regime to account,” said Liz Truss.

Ukraine says it is investigating some 7,600 potential war crimes and at least 500 suspects following its February 24 invasion by Russia. Russia describes its intervention in Ukraine as a “special operation”.

The announcement comes as the Minister travels to The Hague to meet the President of the International Criminal Court, Judge Piotr Hofmanski, and his Dutch counterpart Wopke Hoekstra.
