Ukraine can now receive donations made in Dogecoin (DOGE)

Ukraine accepts Dogecoin donations

The list of cryptocurrencies accepted for donations in support of Ukraine continues to expand. After Polkadot’s DOT, preceded by Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and USDC ERC-20, it’s the turn of Dogecoin (DOGE) to enter.

This is Mykhailo Fedorovthe Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister, who announced it first via his Twitter account, taking the opportunity to make a spade at Russia:

The value of Dogecoin has exceeded that of the ruble. We are now accepting donations in memecoins. Now even memes can support our army and save lives against the Russian invader. Owners of DOGE All Around the Earth, Elon Musk and Shibetoshi Nakamoto [créateur du Dogecoin], let’s go. »

In the space of 2 hours, more than 210 transactions were carried out on the new address, for a total of 52,000 DOGEor about $6,900 as of this writing.

Remember that according to one of his tweets, the Ukrainian government announced that it was going gradually accepting new cryptocurrencies for donations. We can therefore expect the list to grow further in the coming days.

The role of cryptocurrencies in the conflict

Cryptocurrencies occupy a prominent place in the current war between Ukraine and Russiaand on both sides.

On the Russian side first, it had been imagined that digital assets could serve as an exit route at least provisionally for the country, in particular after the eviction from the SWIFT network of several of its main banks. An idea denied by Jake Chervinsky, the executive vice-president of the Blockchain Association, for whom it would prove to be a counterproductive choice.

Note, however, that Russian citizens continue to be able take advantage of the different cryptocurrency platforms, whether they are decentralized or not, despite the request of the government of Joe Biden to cut off access to them. Moreover, Binance had explicitly announced that it did not want to prevent its Russian users from using the services of its platform.

However, on the Ukrainian side, the government has been accepting cryptocurrency donations since February 28, which represent several tens of millions of dollars and continue to come from all directions.

Apart from donations made directly to Ukraine, many associations have also set up a support system through cryptocurrencies, such as UkraineDAO ($6.7 million), NGO Come Back Alive ($9 million) or even Unchain Fund (2 million dollars), to name only the main ones.

Finally, Ukrainian citizens are almost forced to turn to cryptocurrencies since their withdrawal limit has been limited and FOREX withdrawals have simply been forbidden to them to avoid possible capital flight.
