(Reuters) – Ukraine’s nuclear agency and interior ministry said on Friday it had noted an increase in radiation levels at the site of the former Chernobyl power plant in the north of the country.

“Radiation is starting to increase. It’s not serious for Kyiv at the moment but we are monitoring the situation,” the interior ministry said.

Experts from the nuclear agency did not provide precise data but said the change was due to radioactive dust being lifted into the air as heavy military machinery passed through the area.

Russian forces on Thursday seized the site of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where radioactive waste has been stored since the 1986 disaster.
