Lhe head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, denounced Wednesday, September 28 the “referendums” of annexation organized by Moscow in Ukrainian regions, qualifying them as “illegal” polls with “manipulated” results. “This is yet another violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, against a backdrop of systematic human rights violations,” he wrote on Twitter. “We salute the courage of the Ukrainians, who continue to oppose and resist the Russian invasion,” he added.

The pro-Russian authorities in the Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhia, Kherson, Luhansk and Donetsk claimed victory for the “yes” vote in favor of annexation by Russia during these “referendums”. Moscow has once again brandished the threat of nuclear weapons to defend these territories. “Fictitious referendums. Fictitious results. We do not recognize them”, reacted for his part in the night Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, which represents the 27 Member States of the EU.

A spokesman for Josep Borrell had warned on Tuesday that the EU would sanction all those who participated in the organization of these elections. “There will be consequences for all the people who took part in the organization of these illegal referendums and who supported them,” declared Peter Stano. The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, for his part denounced “simulacra of referendums”, seeing in them “a new escalation of Putin’s war”.
