MOSCOW (Reuters) – Alarmist statements by Western powers about an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine are a provocation and could have harmful consequences, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.

US President Joe Biden said on Friday he was confident that Russia could launch an armed operation “at any time”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not pay attention to these remarks, said Dmitry Peskov on the Rossiya 1 television channel.

“The fact is that this leads to an aggravation of the tension. And when the tension reaches its peak, as is the case, for example, on the contact line (in the east of Ukraine-Editor’s note), any spark, any unforeseen incident, any planned provocation can lead to irreparable consequences,” he said.

“So all of this has – may have – adverse consequences. The daily exercise of announcing a date for a Russian invasion of Ukraine is very bad practice,” he said.
