(Reuters) – The prosecutor general of the People’s Republic of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and his deputy were killed when a bomb exploded in their office on Friday, the leader of the self-proclaimed republic said. supported by Russia.

“Today, as a result of a terrorist act, Prosecutor General Sergei Gorenko and his deputy Ekaterina Steglenko were killed,” Leonid Pasetchnik said in a statement broadcast on Telegram messaging.

The separatist leader accused Ukraine, a “terrorist state”, of being responsible for the attack.

Kyiv had no immediate comment.

Leonid Pasechnik described Thursday as “tense” the situation in the territory of the self-proclaimed republic, which corresponds to the oblast [région administrative] of Luhansk entirely conquered by the Russian army last July, but threatened today on its borders by the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian forces.
