Ukraine restores rail link with Moldova

Aug 22 (Reuters) – After a 23-year suspension, Ukraine has re-established a rail link with neighboring Moldova that could carry 10 million tonnes of goods a year, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said on Monday.

Although the Head of State did not specify what types of goods it was, Ukraine wants to find new channels to export millions of tons of grain blocked since the offensive launched by Russia on February 24 .

This 22 kilometer route connects Berezyne, in western Ukraine, with Basarabeasca, in Moldova.

Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksander Kubrakov said on Facebook that the link would provide an alternative route to the Black Sea port of Odessa.

As part of an agreement concluded on July 22 by Ukraine and Russia under the aegis of the United Nations and Turkey, ships carrying grain have started to leave Odessa and other Ukrainian ports. (Report David Ljunggren Ottawa; French version Laetitia Volga, told by Jean Terzian)
