Ukraine-Russia conflict: Governments urge caution against Russian cyberattacks

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not only armed. In this “modern” war, digital means are also involved to bend the enemy or raise funds. Recently, Ukraine claimed to have prevented a hacking of its electricity network.

On Wednesday, Western governments issued a joint statement warning of a potential increase in cyberattacks carried out by Russia or sympathetic hacker groups.

For Five Eyes, the whole world is a target

According to the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which brings together the cybersecurity agencies of the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, all organizations worldwide could be exposed to cybercrime.

A warning that is all the more important for allied countries providing aid to Ukraine or sanctioning Russia for its invasion. Attacks can target specific infrastructure to exert pressure or, like the one carried out by North Korea recently, aim to raise funds.

According to the US Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), intelligence sources indicated the possibility of multiple attacks from Moscow or Russian-backed cybercriminal groups against any targets threatening the Russian government or people.
