KYIV (Reuters) – The main condition for a possible resumption of talks with Russia would be the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the secretary of Ukraine’s defense and national security council said on Tuesday.

Oleksiy Danilov also stressed that Ukraine must obtain the “guarantee” of having modern armaments and anti-aircraft defense systems.

“Russia, negotiations. The main condition of the President of Ukraine is the restoration of Ukrainian territorial integrity,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Guarantee – modern air defense systems, air assets, tanks and long-range missiles. Strategy – proactive measures. Russian missiles must be destroyed before they are fired from the air, land and sea,” he said. added.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said on Monday he was open to discussions with Russia, but on the condition that they be “sincere” negotiations allowing the restoration of Ukraine’s borders, obtaining compensation for the attacks carried out by Russia and to punish those responsible for war crimes.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that US diplomats were privately urging Ukrainian officials to show a willingness to negotiate with Russia so as not to appear intransigent to continue international support.
