An American student has created an online alert for aerial bombings in Ukraine. Indeed, the siren system, too unreliable, is not accessible by everyone in the country. Now the “Ukraine Siren Alerts” notifies Ukrainian citizens in real time through social networks.
The Ukraine Siren Alerts (UASA) sends real-time Twitter, Facebook and Telegram notifications using municipal data, triggering the sound alerts themselves. They are listed by time, date and place.
Protect citizens, inform the media
The project started when Bernard Moerdler wanted to help his Ukrainian girlfriend to follow the events likely to affect the members of his family still present on the territory. Many Ukrainians do not hear the sound alarms and cannot seek shelter. Now, thanks to UASA, which has 10,000 Twitter followers (@UkraineAlerts), citizens can follow Russian army raids in real time. Displaced populations can also learn about the bombardments in their hometown or that of their loved ones.
The online alarm protects citizens as much as it informs foreign media of the frequency of bombings. Outside the country, it is indeed difficult to realize the extent of the damage. Listing the bombings could thus constitute a resource in the future, in order to document the events of the war and to retrace the attacks.
