Ukraine-The director of the Zaporizhia power plant arrested by Russian soldiers-Energoatom

KYIV, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The director of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, located in Ukrainian territory but occupied by Russian troops, was arrested by a Russian patrol, the state-owned company in charge of operating the site said on Saturday. .

Ihor Murachov was arrested while he was going to Enerhodar on Friday around 4:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. GMT), the group’s president, Petro Kotine, said in a statement.

“He was taken out of the car, he was blindfolded and he was taken by car to an unknown destination,” he said on Telegram messaging, adding that he had no immediate information on his fate.

The Zaporijjia power plant has become one of the key issues in the conflict in Ukraine, with Kyiv and Moscow accusing each other of bombing the site at the risk of triggering a nuclear disaster.

Ihor Murachov “assumes exclusive responsibility for the nuclear and radioactive safety” of the site and his arrest “compromises the safety of the activities of the largest nuclear power station in Ukraine and Europe”, underlined Petro Kotine.

He called on Russian troops to “immediately cease acts of nuclear terrorism targeting the management and staff” of the site and release Ihor Murachov. (Report Pavel Polityuk, French version Marc Angrand)
