Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine shows that Europe must take the shaping of a new European order into its own hands. In this order, Ukraine will occupy a central place. The EU must now prove its ability to act.
Has the war in Ukraine shattered the dream of European sovereignty? In any case, without the support of the United States, the Russian flag would have been flying in Kiev for a long time. The EU alone would hardly be able to protect its members from the Russian threat. But to draw the conclusion from this that the agenda for an independent EU should be abandoned – as has been called for by numerous analysts recently – is short-sighted and even dangerous.
